Performing a hydrostatic test is common and is considered one of the best methods of testing wastewater lines. The purpose of testing is to determine if lines are in good standing and functioning as intended by testing for strength and leaks in the lines.
A plumber will perform a hydrostatic test by placing an inflatable test ball in the yard line to prevent water from flowing to the city sewer. The plumber then removes a downstairs toilet and fills the wastewater system with water. After 30 minutes, the plumber will revisit the test to determine if the water level has dropped. If the water level has dropped, there is a leak somewhere in the system, if the water level has remained consistent, there is no leak in the system.
If a leak is detected, upon your request, we will perform what is called isolation testing. It is the process in which separate sections of your plumbing system are isolated and tested. This is done by using a combination of inflatable test balls and cameras in each specific line. Isolation testing will allow our master plumber to narrow down and locate the specific lines that are compromised. Once the evaluation has been completed, the master plumber will explain the best options to resolve any issues found.
There are four primary reasons for a hydrostatic test: a real estate transaction, inspection following foundation repair, preventative maintenance, and new construction inspection.
We understand buying a home is a big investment and accurate and detailed inspections are crucial in the decision-making process. Often, the current homeowner or seller is unaware that their wastewater system has been compromised. Testing the system will allow the seller the opportunity to repair any compromises prior to the closing date.
Following foundation repair, it is very important to conduct testing to prevent future damage and to meet the requirements of the foundation repair warranty. The primary objective of foundation repair is to level your foundation. In many cases, during the leveling process, hyperextending wastewater lines are unavoidable. Hyperextended lines can lead to stress in couplings and fittings causing leaks. A wastewater leak under a foundation will cause soil to heave which will undermine the foundation repairs performed. Leaks should be identified and repaired immediately.
Wastewater tests are a key component in preventative maintenance, early detection of leaks will prevent serious damage to the interior of a home. Leaks are a common problem causing slab foundations to fail. Water absorbed by the soil beneath your foundation can cause heaving, settling, and cracks.
Often, as a condition required in the sale of a property or as a condition of a foundation warranty, a hydrostatic test must pass inspection. Following testing, you will receive a letter stating that the plumbing test has either passed or failed. The letter will outline all tests, inspections, and work performed, as well as any other findings related to your wastewater system.
