In 1838, George West Spear, an early Texas settler, acquired 4,400 acres in what would later become Central & West Austin. The land would eventually become part of “North Austin” and include neighborhoods such as Abercrombie and Crestwood.
For 150 years, the mysterious populated neighborhood of “Abercrombie” has continually appeared and disappeared from Austin area maps. The area is/was near today’s capital metro station at the corner of Lamar and Justin. In 1881 a railroad was constructed between Austin and Bernet along the northeast section of today’s Crestview, many historical train records have an “Abercrombie” stop.
There are two possible origins for the name of the neighborhood. The first is that the town was named after John Abercrombie, a farmer, who purchased land north of Austin in 1855. John likely died sometime between 1862- 1865 fighting in the Civil War leaving the land to his widow, Sarah. It is possible that Sarah Abercrombie sold the land to the railroad and in turn, railroad executives named the train stop Abercrombie. Another origin may have been Leonard Anderson Abercrombie, a Texas lawyer, confederate army officer, and legislator. His Son-In-Law, a railroad lawyer may have influenced legislators to name the neighborhood in Leonard Anderson Abercrombie’s honor.
