Buda
In early 1830s Stephen Eggleston sailed his ship from North Carolina to Matagorda Bay, Texas. Eggleston stayed in Matagorda until preparations could be made to travel by wagon to the Stephen F. Austin Colony in what was part of Mexico at the time. Following his arrival, the Mexican government provided Eggleston with a land grant that would later be used as land for the town of Buda. Eggleston joined the Texas Army and fought for Texas independence from Mexico. He fought and survived the Battles of Brushy Creek, Guadalupe and San Jacinto. After returning from war, he was attacked by raiding Indians in front of his house and died three days later from his wounds.
Throughout the 1830’s, settlers began building homesteads on what was originally part of the Mexican land grant to Eggleston. Their settlement was between the Tonkawas and Karankawas tribes who were very friendly with the settlers. In 1840, their friendship was tested when the Comanche tribe launched the largest raid ever mounted by Native Americans on a white settlement. The Tonkawa Tribe teamed up with the Texas Rangers in opposition and fought off the Camanche. Unfortunately, due to the alliance with the settlers, other tribes would eventually fight and massacre most of the Tonkawa Tribe.
In the late 1870’s, The Great Northern Railroad planned a rail link between Austin and San Antonio. To encourage the railroad to establish a stop close to the settlement, Cornelia Trimble offered land to the railroad and community for a planned future train stop and town. In 1880, armed with the land donation, the settlers would lobby and win a request for a train stop.
Cornelia Trimble platted the town in 1881, she established streets and a 150-foot wide right of way for the railroad to build tracks and buildings. Following the construction of the railroad, businesses sprang up, lumber mills, banks, newspapers and hotels, including the Carrington Hotel (also known as the “Buda House”), which served meals to railroad travelers. A column written in 1886 in the Hays County Times and Farmer’s Journal notes that “The Buda House is one of the best hotels in the state. The polite and entertaining hostess, Mrs. Carrington, meets all with a courteous welcome.”

Soils expanding and contracting with weather conditions cause wastewater lines to shift.
