Cherrywood
A land grant from Mexico in the 1830’s and later from the Republic of Texas encouraged settlers to establish communities along the Colorado River. These communities including the land around the Stephen F. Austin Colony and the area that would later become Cherrywood. Early settlers of Cherrywood converted woodlands into farmland, raised pigs & cattle, harvested cotton and planted peach orchards. Following the Second World War, Cherrywood was transformed once again, homes and businesses were built and transportation networks were developed. The cotton and peaches were replaced with bungalows, ranches, and two-story stucco duplexes.
The neighborhood now known as Cherrywood takes its name from a road that runs through it, Cherrywood Road. The names of early settlers and property owners, like Doris and J.H. French, Bascom and Rogan Giles, Walter Schieffer, Nye Patterson and others, are honored in the names of streets and parks in Cherrywood.
