Jollyville
The area of Jollyville was first settled by Henry Rhodes after obtaining a land grant in 1841 of about 1,000 acres. Rhodes was soon joined by John & Nancy Jolly of Tennessee. The couple married in 1847 and soon caught “Texas Fever” (the term used for settlers coming to Texas) and by 1852 the Tennesseans moved to Travis County. As Civil War loomed, the “Travis Mounted Rifles” were organized. John Jolly joined and fought with the group for four years and was badly wounded.
Following the Civil War, Jolly returned to Travis County with a drive to establish a small town in the “countryside”. He purchased 160 acres, built a log home and established a blacksmith shop and general store. By 1870, Jolly had laid out a future village and gifted land to settlers moving to the area. He also donated land for the construction of a School/Church and cemetery. Soon, the area became known as “Jollyville”.
Stories about the early settlement of Jollyville have been passed down through the years. Settler Thomas Strode, a farmer who bought land in 1845, once said “in those days, the oxen gave the first warning of approaching Indians. When the oxen pulling the plow began to sniff the air, we would unhitch them and go to the house to prepare our guns.”
