Kyle Fun Facts
In the late 1870’s, David E. Moore and Fergus Kyle deeded 200 acres for a townsite to the Great Northern Railroad. The new town drew residents and businesses from Mountain City, three miles west, and Blanco, four miles west. The community’s population exceeded 500 by 1882.
From 1892 to 1901, Kyle was the childhood home of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Katherine Anne Porter. Many of her most famous short stories, such as “Noon Wine”, are set in locations in and around Kyle.
Kyle is the origin of the first fajita taco! Juan Antonio “Sonny” Falcón sold the first fajita taco in September of 1969 at a concession booth at a Diez y Seis celebration in Kyle. Falcón worked as a butcher in Guajardo Cash Grocery & Market, a popular store in East Austin run by his mother-in-law Soledad Guardiola Guajardo. According to his family, Falcón was trying to popularize an affordable cut of meat and attract more business to the family store. He went on to popularize the dish throughout Central Texas by selling his fajita tacos to crowds of appreciative people at rodeos, fairs, and outdoor festivals on nights and weekends. Falcon became personally identified with the dish by the late 1970s and an Austin reporter christened him “The Fajita King,” and the name stuck.

Soils expanding and contracting with weather conditions cause wastewater lines to shift.
